Does it matter which way you turn your work in crochet?

Are you shaping a circle or a square? It doesn't matter whether you begin in the round or line. Crochet chain shaping is necessary. Will you form a magic round or a crochet chain? Create a rectangle, oval, or square? You want a perfect hourglass shape for your crochet items without pulling. Crochet shaping depends on where you want to increase and decrease. One example is a hat. Will you increase and decrease? On edge or in the middle? Do you want the top to curve as a round or square? Shape with a defined square shape? Crochet shaping does that. Imagine yourself crocheting on a plane or a flat surface.

What Does the Process of Shaping Involve?

Notice the purple hat to the left. An increase followed by a decrease acts like a flat fold. It creates a nice transition from the body of the hat to the top of it.

Shaping involves increasing, followed by decreasing. I use this technique when crocheting my unique and shapely hats on Etsy. Crochet shapes or crochet curves act as a dart that relates to sewing. Crochet shaping relates to a tailored appearance. We love the semi-fitted look.

How do you do a single crochet decrease in the round?

Click the YouTube Video above left. It shows how to crochet around a circle. It begins with an increase, decrease, and single crochet 1.

It's a small circle. First, I will increase and then decrease. When I follow these steps, a fold creates. I began with a round. I'm using a size I-9 (6.00 mm) crochet hook. And I'm using a worsted weight yarn called I Love This Yarn, available at Hobby Lobby stores. So beginning this, starting with my marker, I'm going to single crochet.

Increase by single crocheting two stitches in the same single crochet. The edge will ripple. See the original linear side. Keep working until the end of the round. Notice the rippled edges. Next is the decrease. Insert hook. There will be 3 yarns pulled over through three. Continue to do this until the end of the round, forming a looser edge.

Here's the completed circle with the decreasing round. Notice when you fold the work under it facing up. The shape is still visible. See what it does. Think of it like working on another surface. Here's a different plane surface lies flat in another direction. In the next round, single crochet one in every single crochet stitch. It reinforces the new plane surface lying on a different direction surface. See how nice it looks. It makes the circle flat. The curve flows versus the 3-step technique I showed you. There you have it!
